Even the bedtime snacks are literary at this hotel in western New York State: homemade cookies in shapes that correspond to bookish room themes. Individually decorated guest rooms bear the monikers of famous writers, among them Agatha Christie and C. S. Lewis, with décor evoking each scribe’s era and works. The Jules Verne Room features a fanciful painted sky and hot-air balloon motif in homage to the author’s adventurous first novel, Five Weeks in a Balloon. A mural in the Shakespeare Room recreates the balcony scene in Romeo and Juliet, and the Dorothy Parker Room is adorned in the art deco style of the 1920s. Along with in-room music selections representative of each author’s time period, works of featured writers are available for perusing and purchase. The hotel is located on the grounds of the Chautauqua Institution, a resort and educational center with an emphasis on the arts.
